KAJIAN PENGARUH TEMPERING TERHADAP SIFAT FISIS DAN MEKANIS PENGELASAN STAINLESS STEEL

ABSTRACT

Welding is a way to joint solid materials by melting the materials. Cooling media in welding process can affect to metal properties, therefore it is required heat treatment process, such as tempering . Material that used in this research is stainless steel  316 series number. The aim of this research is to know the toughness of stainless steel  metal welding with  water- cooled  and air-cooled before tempering process. Tempering process was conducted at 485 oC with retention time ± 2 hours and slow cooling in oven. From this research can be concluded that the hardness and the strain of welding area with tempering process is higher than welding area  without tempering process, wheter with water cooled or air cooled. The hardness of welding area with water cooled is higher than welding area with air cooled , wheter. Meawhile, the strain of welding area with water cooled is lower than welding area with air cooled, wheter with tempering or without tempering process.
